Washington '97 Usenix Speakers and Committee

The Washington Usenix Conference in 1987 was a special event for our chief scientist. It was the fourth time he had chaired an international conference, but this one provided an opportunity for something different. /f

At the Florence '86 EurOpen conference, Tom Ferrin invited David Tilbrook (me) to chair the first day of the Washington Usenix conference and they were prepared to let me choreograph it as I saw fit, given board approval of course. When I presented my plan to the board at the Atlanta Usenix, approval was given. By the end of the Atlanta conference we had the committee and speakers list filled. The picture below was taken in Washington the night before the conference.

The Washington Usenix '87 Program Committee and Speakers

Clockwise from bottom left with * indicating speaker: David Tilbrook (chair), Peter Collinson*, Mike O'Dell*, Neil Groundwater, John Mullen*, Dennis Ritchie*, Eric Allman*, Steve Johnson*, John Mashey*, Jaap Akkerhuis, Jim McKie, Norman Wilson, Debbie Scherrer (assistant chair), and Nigel Martin. Kirk McKusick is behind the camera.

Could a chair ask for a better list of speakers? The committee itself would make a pretty good conference.
